RYA FIRST AID
Our one-day course covers all the main first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross-channel passages. The main focus of this course is to teach candidates how to perform quality first aid but in a marine environment, potentially in confined and difficult places and spaces to carry out the skills. This course is MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence and some commercial work afloat
Preparation
• There is no preparation required to attending this one-day course.
Theory and background
This is a classroom-based course where you will cover both theory and practical session to enable you to carry out First Aid in a Marine environment. The assessment criteria will be Question and Answer session throughout the course with Practical ongoing sessions.
Some of the main areas to be covered are:
• The recovery position in a confined space
• CPR, including the drowning protocol
• Cold shock and hypothermia form immersion and/or exposure
• Seasickness and dehydration
• Medical assistance or advice by VHF
• Helicopter rescue
