Course Overview

The Day Skipper Shore-Based course is an essential theory program for aspiring skippers. It provides a comprehensive foundation in navigation, seamanship, and safety, equipping participants with the knowledge needed to confidently plan and execute coastal passages. This course is suitable for both sailors and powerboaters.

Course Content:

• Navigation and Chartwork: Understanding nautical charts, plotting positions, and course-to-steer calculations
• Tides and Tidal Streams: Calculating tidal heights and streams for safe navigation
• Pilotage: Planning and executing entry into harbors and anchorages
• Meteorology: Understanding weather forecasts and their impact on passage planning
• Rules of the Road: Learning the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)
• Safety at Sea: Emergency procedures, including distress signals and equipment use
• Passage Planning: Combining all elements to create and execute effective passage plans

Course Details:

Prerequisites: No formal prerequisites, but prior experience or knowledge equivalent to the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship course is beneficial.
